Since 1934.

Who we are?

Pension "Jezero" was founded as a hotel in 1934. It represents the very beginning of pension tourism, and tourism as such on the Mljet island. Soon after the hotel was built it became popular with people all over the world - the people who wanted to relax in pure and unspoiled nature. It was renown by its wide variety of sea food, quiet surroundings and obliging owners.

Hotel came to be as a dream came true, a dream of our grandfathers, the three Strazicic brothers.

Nikola, Ivan i Petar, led by their entrepreneur visions and business spirit not so typical for fishermen and peasants they were, following the idea of return to nature, common to that time, the time of neo-romanticism, decided that they will try to make a living in tourism.

Project that they envisioned was grandiose for their time, and obstacles seemed insurmountable, which is the case even today. On the other hand, the brothers were young, strong, skillful and determined. All problems were soon solved. They cleared the building site, manufactured stone blocks, timber, all by themselves. Little by little the hotel of their dreams soon became reality.

In 1934. the Hotel "Jezero" as they named it (it means lake in croatian) attracts its first guests. Out of tourist season the hotel is still the work in progress. The brothers are working constantly on improving and detailing. Toward the end of 1930's they built a pool for live fish and lobsters called jastožera, and hired local fishermen to fill it with ever fresh fish and lobsters for more and more guests. Also they built a tennis court, big cistern to collect rain, an ice factory, a little quay in front of hotel for boats and gondolas they rented for recreation and even hydroplanes in which english officers often came all the way from Malta for seafood and summer parties held at the hotel terrace.

The Hotel was open until the World War 2, when it was forced to close its doors when the war spread to Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After the war and after communist party came to power, the hotel was "nationalized" - taken from the family, and and became the "peoples property".

In years after the war, the time of "peoples government" we were strangers in our own home. We were forced to accept "guests" for free which stayed for a winter, and in summer we were "honored" by frequent visits by communist party elite members. They all used our hotel at their whim, and slowly but surely were destroying our property.

After few years, we were saved by one of communist party leader Vladimir Bakarić who himself fell in love with Mljet island and our hotel. Hotel "Jezero" although devastated, was returned in family property.

Dark ages of communism followed in which private property was constantly depreciated, practically outlawed. The banks wouldn't land money for reconstruction because our hotel business was counter-revolutionary one. The family was impoverished and demotivated and even to this day failed to bring our hotel to yesterdays glory.

The luxury and prosperity of our golden ages are gone, but there are things which couldn't have been taken from us. We are still giving it with pleasure even today. These are, before all else, the beauty of nature and hospitable nature of our own.

Today the tradition of Hotel "Jezero" is continued in its modest form by family of Nikola Stražičić offering to all guests its pension services. We would like You to come and have a true vacation by relaxing in unspoiled nature and to enjoy yourself at Pension "Jezero".

The times have changed, all curtains have fallen. We hope that in future, for your and our own satisfaction, we will reach our goal - to bring once more that old shine and sparkle to our beloved "Jezero".
